The Tylenol Cyanide Murders of 1982
On the morning of 29 September 1982, 12-year-old Mary Kellerman woke up feeling unwell and stayed home from school. She took an extra-strength Tylenol capsule. Within hours, she was dead.
Her father later recalled hearing a noise from the bathroom. “I opened the door and my little girl was on the floor unconscious. She was still in her pajamas.”
Mary’s death was the first in a shocking series of poisonings that would grip Chicago and terrify the nation. By 1 October, seven people had died after taking Tylenol capsules that had been deliberately laced with cyanide.
Days later, an extortion letter arrived at the manufacturer demanding $1 million to stop the killings. Although a suspect was identified and imprisoned for the blackmail attempt, no one was ever conclusively charged with the murders themselves.
The case triggered a major overhaul in product safety standards and remains one of America’s most disturbing unsolved crimes.
